Isaac Evans-Frantz (Brattleboro)
2001 Scholarship Recipient
Brattleboro Union High School, Brattleboro
As
one of his teachers wrote, "In over twenty-seven years of teaching,
Isaac stands out as one of the finest students and human beings
I have had the honor to teach." Isaac excelled outside of school,
marching in parades for peace, telephoning U.S. senators about
international concerns and, while in eighth grade, volunteering
for Bernard Sanders congressional campaign. Isaac began the lifelong
process of coming out in seventh grade and one year later joined
PRISM, Brattleboro Union High School's gay/straight alliance.
His other work includes leading a workshop at the Governor's Institute
on Current Issues and Youth Activism on starting gay/straight
alliances for students in other schools, attending meetings for
GLASS ( a gay/straight alliance) and being a member of the Diversity
and Advisory Committee. Isaac lobbied to have a student be elected
to the Vermont State Board of Education, and after three years
of hard work, it was accepted and Isaac was appointed to the board.
In Vermont, Isaac is the first student to sit on the State Board
of Education as a voting member. Isaac will be attending Oberlin
College to study Liberal Arts.
