Robin Sunquiet, South Burlington
2004 Scholarship Recipient
South Burlington High School
Robin
grew up the only child of a single lesbian mother who was very
involved with the Burlington LGBTQ community. Robin told us that
he found out first hand what prejudice was when he started going
to public school in the third grade,
"I
had an earring on the right side; kids were mean and called me
gay. It was because of the love and confidence that the lesbian
community had in me that I was able to learn to stand up for myself.
Once I stood up for myself, I could not abide seeing others trampled
just for being who they are."
During
high school Robin was a Peer Outreach Worker through the King
Street Youth Center and worked at the Spectrum Youth and Family
Services' Drop-In Center. Through this work Robin knew that he
wanted to help heal separatism, prejudice, hate, an eye for an
eye mentality - all the emotional poison that causes so much pain
in our society.
Robin
will be studying music and sound healing at Naropa University
in Boulder, Colorado this fall. Robin will use music to fulfill
his goal of being a bridge and help people on both sides overcome
the river of ignorance that keeps them apart.
